◎简　　介


　　1922年夏，土耳其萨莫斯雷斯岛，经过几年的漫游亚洲，美国摄影师诺曼·哈里斯陷入了绝望，对自己产生深深的质疑。因为他工作的美国报纸已经拒绝了所有他从战场上拍出的摄影作品，认为其艺术性太强，并不适合发表。于是，哈利斯决定放弃自己所喜欢的摄影记者职业，重返美国重新谋求生路。与此同时在贫穷的萨莫斯雷斯岛，尼基正在为她的芝加哥之旅准备行李，她必须嫁给普罗多莫尼斯，她姐姐曾经嫁过的男人，一个陌生城市里她从来没见过的裁缝。

　　她的姐姐由于不能忍受陌生环境带着病体回到了希腊，尼基则成了姐姐的替代者。诺曼与尼基乘坐了同一条船，诺曼在头等舱，而尼基在三等舱。同船的还有另外700名来自希腊、土耳其、俄罗斯、亚美尼亚等每个角落的“邮购新娘”。在她们的行李箱里，都装着一张男人的照片，尽管素未谋面，但这个男人却将成为她们的丈夫。她们中的有些人是通过移民公司，还有一些是通过孤儿院...
